Jeanne Moreau 's song is called "Just un fil de soie " though (just a thread of silk which represents the lightness of the relationship described in the song as opposed to marriage).

Tying a piece of string (silk) around one's finger is something people do to remember something. The ring is a permanent reminder, while the string is not :) Cheers from Montréal!
