Francoiz

A lot of great albums by filles sourires were released this year (Camille, Coralie Clement, Daphné), but still my favourite is the third disque by Cherbourgs Francoiz Breut. She combines the melancholic, heavy wind & weather-atmosphere of the French Atlantic coast, and the wide open spaces, Cormac McCarthy-moods of the American Heartland. Une Saison Volée is the album Calexico could've made, if they we're two darkhaired French girls. No surprise, Joey Burns sings a duet with Francoiz on this album. The song KM83 never fails to make me sigh. A lot. God, I'd love to see her perform live.

  2. Monsieur Aguuzto, have you heard Tete a Tet by ABBC? A collaborative effort of Burns/Covertino with two Parisian friend who moved to Arizona, Naïm Amor and Thomas Belhom. A bit uneven maybe, but it contains a lot of nice songs. The second track, "Elevator Baby", features française Marianne Dissard on vocals, not really a zuchtmeisje though...
(I have it on vinyl, otherwise a copy would've already been on its way, naturellement :-))

  3. Yes, via Stereo blog I've heard of Marianne Dissard, who sounds like the mother of a zuchtmeisje, who once was a fille sourire. Gonna check out that ABBC album though.

  4. Hey, thanks for all the MP3s...got linked to your site from WFMU. Françoiz Breut is just so under-rated. KM83 is utterly heartbreaking.
