Oh Canada: Naïla

Part Elli Medeiros, part Ariane Moffatt: that's Naïla. A singer from Montreal that debuted early last year, with a versatile album: electronica, popsongs, gentle folksy ballads. Not brilliant, but not without potential. Plus, as one Filles Sourires-visitor pointed out, she has a bit of a gap between her teeth. And as we all know, when it comes to French singing filles, a little space between the front teeth is a plus. Example one. Example two.
Video for Bora Bora.

  1. Thanks for putting Naila on your blog. I'm the anonymous guy who gave you the tip. I agree with you, she's not a full-fledge fille yet, but she certainly seem to have the potential to become one.

I think I got the gist of what is a true fille. I'll keep them coming as soon as I spot one. There should be more as the Quebec music scene has recently shifted from the Céline Dion/Lara Fabian types to a good nurturing ground for Filles.

BTW, your blog idea is brilliant. The Filles chanteuses subject is inexhaustible.

  2. As an example of the bottomless well that is the Filles subject,
here's a good parody done by Rock et Belles Oreilles on their TV show many years ago. The Fille, played by Chatal Francke is called "Mulo" which is Quebec slang for groundhog.
